One week down...

Today Zadie is one week old. I celebrated with her this morning @ 2:30 by getting up and bottle feeding her some milk courtesy of Jorene. It wasn't that much but holding Zadie in my arms while she nurished herself felt so good. Back when I worked at the AJCC Summer Camp, I was responsible for the safety of kids when we had sleepovers. I felt in control and confident. Last night that feeling returned only that her gaze into my eyes showed love and appreciation. Jorene and I will raise her to respect and value herself just as we do her.

Full disclosure...

Yes I was still standing, but at one (actually a couple) time(s), i was close to passing out. I had always heard about guys passing out when their wife delivered their baby, and i didn't want that to happen, but fortunatly there were people there who would see thru my overly matcho exterior and keep me safe.

So I was involved in the delivery of Zadie...ok, i was a part of it, but Jorene was the one who did all the work.(edited for time)When she started her last (set as it were) of contractions, i was standing up assisting with pushing her legs back in a manner that would make passage for baby easier...the first push, i held my breath for a few counts, then I breathed after. I was ok. Second push, I held my breath the whole 10 seconds afterthis one I was definatly woozy. After the fact I realized and was told that i was actually trying to push for her in order to reduse her pain. But honestly i was quite green, and everyone made it quite known to me that I was...they sat me down in a chair and i preformed my duty sitting down for the remaining 3 pushes...after the 4th push whith the vacuum divice, the doctors informed Jorene that it was now or C-Section and Jorene came through like a champ!! Needless to say, when the baby was born,i had another bout of seeing stars, but it quickly passed.

Having been the most exciting 3 days of my life i look forward to writing and documenting Jorene, My and Zadie's life from time to time here...hopefully at least (or at most) once a week. Surely there will be a lot to share...

Time for a recap...

Hey everyone. Well, if you haven't heard by now, Jorene and I have had a beautiful baby girl. Her name is Zadie Charlotte Gorman, and in the 4 days since she was born (and in the 72 hours before) my life has changed in the best possible way. The following will be a real-life day-to-day account of my life, my wife and my new daughter's antics and goings on...

On April 30th Jorene is admitted to St. Vincent's hospital. The babies due date is "supposed" to be May 2, but the doctors want to induce her to prevent complications. They estimated the baby being 7 lbs 7 oz at 37 weeks and it was decided that while just 2 days it would be better for both the mommy and the child.
At about 9:30pm on the 30th Drs administered a dose of Cervidil to Jorene in order to speed the process up. Jorene and the soon to be dad spent the first night together in the hospital room thinking that a May Day baby was in the offing...
The next morning the dose was removed, and the Dr's still didn't see any improvement so another dose was given. Later, another drug was given to help, but there still wasn't much progress made. Contractions were happening, but they were coupled and not being spaced correctly. Finally at around 4:30pm, the decision was made to break the membrane to get things moving. She was given Pitosin as well and things started happening...contractions started spreading out and became more regular. At around 7 or 7:30 Jorene was really tired as would be expected, and she opted for an epidural to take the "edge" off. My mom reminded me to get a bite to eat (thanks Mom!!) and when i came back upstairs Jorene was sleeping comfortably. I layed myself down on the couch/bed and caught some zzzzs also.
When i awoke Jorene was dilated close to 8cm, and shortly after she was 10. At around 10:30 the doctors thought that the baby would arrive quickly, but Zadie had something else in mind. Jorene was in labour for 2 hours. But Zadie just wouldn't reveal herself. Finally wanting to avoid a C-Section, Jorene opted for the vacuum suction option. The cup was attached to baby's head and the suction pump was pumped. The first attempt didn't work as the cup popped off with little progress made. The second try was more successful though. At 12:32am on May 2, 2012 after her 4th push on a contraction the doctors said that she had one try left. With all her might she gave one last push and this miracle literally torpedoed out of her. At that that time i experienced an emotion that i had never had. Love/excitement/amazement, and about 10 more emotions shot through me at one time. Zadie entered the world exactly when she was supposed to and her father was still standing...to be continued
